Choose the Right Rug Material

Updated: Jul 29

Rugs play a major role in enhancing the aesthetics of your home. If chosen well, it can make a bold statement. In order to select the right carpet for your floor, you should know about the types of materials that are available for you.

However, if you don’t know anything about the types of carpets then you are at the right place.

Types Of Materials:

While a rug can be made by using virtually any fiber, these are the most commonly used materials, that you can find easily:

  1. Wool Rugs

  2. Cotton Rugs

  3. Jute Rugs

  4. Viscose Rugs

  5. PET or Polyester Carpets

  6. Silk Rugs

Let’s look at these in detail one by one

Wool Rugs

Wool carpets are one of the most used types of carpets in India. It adds a timeless elegance and sophistication to your house. Sheep from different regions produce different kinds of wool. Generally, Merino wool is considered the softest. New Zealand sheep are considered to produce the best wool in terms of overall quality. Indian sheep produce a durable and rugged wool suitable for durries. Rugs made of wool are suitable for places that have high foot traffic due it it's shrink resistance and high durability. The anti-microbial nature of wool also prevents odors and allergy-causing dust mites. Overall, wool carpets add a touch of lavishness to your space while offering exceptional resilience.

We obtain wool from a number of countries. The quality of wool is affected by the kind of environment sheep live in. One thing to watch out for in wool products is anti-mulesing.

What is Mulesing?

Mulesing is a controversial procedure done by a shepherd, in which the skin around the tail of the sheep is cut to prevent flystrike, a deadly disease caused by fly larvae. It is a gruesome process with no legal backing. Inhouse stands against mulesing. We endeavour to establish checks on all our sources and procure wool only from non-mulesed sheep.

Cotton Rugs

Cotton has been used since ancient times to insulate and protect. It is one of the most abundantly used natural materials on the planet. Cotton rugs are often made without any additives to give them a soft bounce that feels amazing to touch. It is a highly durable and absorbent material, making it the perfect fibre for vibrant dyes and rough use. Our cotton rugs are machine-washable, making them an easy way to add a splash of colour in your room.

Jute Rugs

Jute has been in use throughout South Asia since 3000 BCE and has found its way to a variety of implementations. As a low-maintenance, high-durability material, this is a sustainable choice for carpets as well as accessories. Jute has a short growth period, and is biodegradable, meaning it can be produced quickly and disposed of safely after use. Jute is used as an industrial packing material, hence its durability is well-recognised. Our jute rugs are produced in natural as well as dyed colours, so they can add a bit of playful rustic aesthetic to any setting.

Viscose Rugs

Viscose is also known as "artificial silk". Rugs made using viscose have a high shine and feel super soft to touch. As a lightweight and absorbent material, viscose needs special care just like silk. It can be blended with other materials to add texture and there are many ways to play around this fibre. Recent developments have also seen many variations of viscose come up, each with unique properties that make the rugs stand out.

PET or Polyester Carpets

Polyester rugs are commonly used in areas with moderate rain or Sun, as these are resistant to shrinking and fading over time. Often seen in balconies and terraces, polyester rugs can be a great addition to outdoor seating areas.

PET rugs are made by recycling plastic bottles. The plastic used in soft-drink bottles and packaged drinking water is a major pollutant of oceans and landfills. Our process involves saving the plastic from reaching the oceans, crushing it and spinning it into yarn that is then made into unique rugs.

Silk Rugs

Silk is a luxurious material that is difficult and time-consuming to create. Silk rugs are the most commonly recognised when people talk about “Persian” or “Kashmiri” rugs. As a high-strength fibre, silk is often knotted by hand to make intricate patterns that take months to create. In the industry, we prepare for years in advance to match the upcoming trends and keep the tradition of hand-knotted rugs alive

How to Choose the Right Rug Material?

There are several factors to consider when choosing a rug. Apart from the look of the rug, its material and quality of knots determine the price. Here is a 3-step process to follow when choosing your rug:

  1. Set a budget: Without a budget, you may be lost when it comes to the sheer variety out there. Silk rugs will obviously cost much more than Jute rugs.

  2. Decide the theme of the space: The placement of a rug enhances the aesthetic appeal of any room. If you have a rustic vibe, going for a Jute or Cotton rug is a good idea. On the other hand, a more modern room might need a Wool rug. Luxurious spaces look good with Viscose or Silk rugs.

  3. The climate of the area: Generally, all materials can work in all indoor conditions if they are produced with proper precautions in mind. Still, ask your vendor if the rug that particularly catches your eye is suitable for the space you want it in. For example, a Wool rug might not be suitable for outdoor use, but will do well in entryways to prevent your indoors from getting dirt tracks.

  4. (If required) Question the pet-friendliness of rugs: Pets bring a new element to consider with rugs. You don’t want your fluffy friend to relieve itself on that expensive silk rug, or your feline to scratch up your lovely woollen bedside runner. Once again, your vendor can be your guide when it comes to pet-friendliness of rug materials.
